The Dark Side of Sunscreen: Toxic Ingredients to Avoid

Summer is just around the corner, which means it's time to start stocking up on sunscreen!  While sunscreen is crucial for protecting our skin from the sun's harmful UV rays, not all sunscreen products are created equal. In fact, some popular sunscreen brands contain toxic ingredients that can do more harm than good.

So before you start spraying and slathering, read ahead to learn about some of the most concerning ingredients found in sunscreens and why you should avoid them in your beach bag!

1. Oxybenzone

Oxybenzone is one of the most commonly used UV filters in sunscreens. However, it has been linked to hormonal disruptions in both females and males, allergies, and cell damage. Studies have shown that oxybenzone can be absorbed through the skin and enter the bloodstream, potentially making it one of the most worrisome sunscreen ingredients.

2. Octinoxate

Like oxybenzone, octinoxate is another chemical UV filter that has raised concerns. It has been shown to disrupt hormone function and potentially contribute to endometriosis and fertility issues in women. Additionally, octinoxate has been found to be toxic to marine life, making it a threat to coral reefs and other ecosystems so be extra wary before entering natural bodies of water with sunscreens containing octinoxate. For this reason, both oxybenzone and octinoxate have been banned in Key West and Hawaii because of their toxic effects on marine life.

3. Avobenzone

Another chemical filter, avobenzone is an unstable substance that is often paired with other chemicals to stabilize it. Its breakdown in your body can not only cause allergic reactions, but also disrupt hormones, particularly testosterone receptors.

4. Parabens

Parabens are preservatives used in many personal care products, including sunscreens. They have been linked to hormone disruption and may contribute to breast cancer risk. While the research is ongoing, it's best to err on the side of caution and choose paraben-free sunscreen options.

5. Fragrance

Many sunscreens contain synthetic fragrances, which can be irritating to the skin and cause allergic reactions. Additionally, fragrances are often a cocktail of undisclosed chemicals, making it difficult to assess their safety. It's best to choose fragrance-free sunscreens to avoid potential skin irritation and other health risks.

These are just a few ingredients to get familiar with when reading labels. Other toxic ingredients found in many popular sunscreens to look out for are homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene.

Protecting your skin from the sun is crucial, but it's important to be mindful of the ingredients in your sunscreen. Look for products that are free from the toxic ingredients mentioned above and prioritize mineral-based sunscreens with active ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These mineral sunscreens provide effective sun protection without the potential health risks associated with chemical filters.

Remember, a little extra effort in reading labels and choosing safer sunscreen options can go a long way in protecting your health and the environment. Stay sun-safe this summer while being mindful of the products you use on your skin!
